2^ST PROGRESS REPORT

 

Introduction

This is a Rotary Humanitarian project focusing on water, sanitation and hygiene education in schools. It is a pilot project targeting three schools in Asembo sub county, Siaya County, in the western part of Kenya around lake Victoria. The broad objective is to help schools provide for a healthy and supportive learning environment for children as part of the broader child-friendly schools initiative. The anticipated outcome is increased enrollment, improved attendance, more teacher child contact and eventually better school grades, all other factors being equal.

 

The specific objectives were to:

1.    Provide 1nos. 10,000 litre storage tanks for each school for drinking

2.    Provide 1nos. 5,000 litre storage tanks for each school for sanitation

3.    Construct 4 doors block of ECOSAN toilets per school(girls).

4.    Construct 3doors block of ECOSAN toilets and 1nos urinal per school(boys).

5.    Construct 1nos waste decomposing shelter for each school

6.    Construct 2nos hand washing facilities per school

7.    Provide 2nos chlorine dispensing facilities per school.

8.    Conduct 3nos trainings

 

The work commenced on 2^nd February 2017, one month later, than the initially planed commencement date. The project is intended to be complete by 31^st October 2017.

 

Progress

As at 1^st October 2017

·      All the  water collection tanks are in place complete with associated collection goods at 100% rating

·      Constructions of all ECOSAN toilets have been done. Waste chamber doors 50% fitted. Minor repairs in progress. Rating at 99%

·      Two training has been conducted. Preparations for final training on completed. Rating 70%

Variations.

 Substituting one no. 5000 liter tanks with a 3000 and a 2000 litre tanks due to technical considerations.

Consequence:

·      Three tank bases instead of two. As much as the capacities remain the same there was increase in materials given the two bases instead of one; and additional plumbing materials. Similarly there is likely to be some marginal increase in the labour cost resulting from these variations.

 

·      Heavy rains and flash floods had some interference with crucial access to sites using trucks. This mostly affected Okiro School. The effect is increased costs of transportation as the contractor had to use transport alternative transport modes from central location to some sites.

·      Similarly the contractor was instructed to make alternative arrangement to get water for construction resulting in extra costs.

·      Toilet Hole covers and Hand washing basins were erroneously omitted from specifications

·      Extra  inspection visits due variations

 

Conclusion: The variations have financial implications. These variations have been charged on the contingency provision.

 

Concluding remarks

The progress has been good with lots of cooperation and team work from respective stakeholders. The project manager has been particularly supportive in ensuring close cooperation with the stakeholders’ smooth operation at project sites.

RC Maseno on its part has kept close monitoring and provided stewardship to ensure there is value for Rotary funds.

Variations.

·      The ground terrain warranted a variation in the design. This involved replacing one no. 5000 liter tanks with 2nos 3000 and 2000 litre tanks. As much as the capacities remain the same there would be increase in materials given the two bases instead of one; and additional plumbing materials. Similarly there is likely to be some marginal increase in the labour cost resulting from these variations.

UTVIKLINGSPROSJEKTET «DALA RIEKO WATER & SANITATION» I KENYA

Raufoss Rotaryklubb ,  i et samarbeide med Østre Toten RK, Hadeland RK, Hadeland Syd RK og Jevnaker RK, er  i full gang med gjennomføring av  et  utviklingsprosjekt i Kenya.   «Dala Rieko Water & Sanitation project» finner sted  i Asembo Bay,  nær Victoriasjøen,  nærmere bestemt i landsbyen Wera med ca. 2000 husstander.   Prosjektet går på to typer fysiske installasjoner.  Bygging av toaletter og montering av store tanker til samling av regnvann, samt opplæring i hygiene.  Drift og vedlikehold av anleggene har også stor fokus.  Totalt investerer Rotary mer enn NOK 300.000 i  prosjektet.  Dette er vi stolte av å få til i et område med små ressurser.  Samarbeide  med en Rotaryklubb i området, Maseno Rotary Club,  er med på å sikre at ressursene blir brukt i henhold til planer og budsjett.

Området som ble valgt til prosjektområde har lange tørkeperioder og svært lang vei til vann som kan brukes til husholdning og drikkevann.   Når det regner kommer det store mengder som bare flyter vekk og blander seg med gjørme og sand.  Det har ikke vært vanlig praksis å samle det «store» regnet og har heller ikke vært ressurser til det. Nå er store tak på to skoler, to kirker og et kommunehus gjort i stand med takrenner og rørsystem.    Fundament er bygd og til sammen er ni ståltanker på 10000 og 5000 liter  montert , fylt med regnvann og er allerede til stor glede for skolebarn og landsbybefolkning for øvrig.   



Skolebarn ved en av skolene i landsbyen Wera fryder seg over vannet, som er rent nok til å drikkes.

Særlig i Afrika er at det viktig å ta vare på alle ressurser som kan brukes for å få planter til å vokse og bære avling, varme er det rikelig av.  Jorda er veldig skrinn her, slik at det trengs ekstra tilførsel av humus og gjødsel, i tillegg til vann.   ECOSAN toalett er utviklet med tanke på dette og har  et system der det tørre og våte skilles.  Etter en prosess blir det god gjødsel som fylles i plantehull.    ECOSAN er godt utprøvd andre steder.  Derfor ble den andre delen av prosjektet å bygge åtte stk. ECOSAN toalett, til glede for skolebarn og for noen «utvalgte» husstander i landsbyen.

Hvordan kom prosjektet i stand?

Åshild Lundgaard, leder av Internasjonal komite i klubben forteller:  «Det var i forbindelse med et besøk i Kisumu-området høsten 2010 at ideen ble født.    Jeg kom til den lokalsamfunnseide «oasen» Dala Rieko CBO i Asembo Bay ved Victoriasjøen.  Her fikk jeg oppleve at «gråstein kan bli til gull».  Fra å være et mislykket og nedlagt utviklingsprosjekt i en fabrikkbygning med et lite stykke ufruktbar steinjord rundt, hadde Ellinor og Tor Steinar Rafoss fra Søgne fått det til bli en virkelig grønn oase på bare 2-3 år. Utviklingsarbeid i Afrika var de ikke ukjent med fra før, slik at de visste at de måtte spille på lag med ressurspersoner i lokalområdet for å lykkes.  De fikk raskt tillit blant befolkningen rundt slik at Dala Rieko ble « et sted for kunnskapsdeling og god praksis».   Hovedsatsingen var å jobbe med sikkerhet for mat på bordet for folk.   Vann, jordforbedring og ta vare på innsjøen, var viktig for å få det til.   Regnvann fra tak ble samlet i tanker, samt at regnvannet som kom i store mengder og skyllet med seg jorda, ble ledet til der det skulle gro planter.    Vannhyasinter fra innsjøen ble kjørt opp i trillebårer, tørket og brukt som gjødsel i plantehull, sammen med annet planteavfall.  Folk jobbet, avlingene økte og de tok med seg lærdommen til sin lille jordlapp.   Tor Steinar Rafoss har som leveregel «Learning by doing», noe som virkelig har vært en suksessfaktor her.

Da Raufoss Rotary besluttet å gjennomføre et utviklingsprosjekt i Kenya,  var det Tor Steinar Rafoss som anbefalte landsbyen Wera som sted for prosjektet.  Behovet innen sanitær og vann er stort og han visste at folk her er dyktige og ville gjøre en stor dugnadsinnsats.  Med Dala Rieko og kompetansen her, i tillegg til samarbeidet med den lokale Rotaryklubben,  har alt gått på skinner.

Da Raufoss Rotary besluttet å gjennomføre et utviklingsprosjekt i Kenya,  var det Tor Steinar Rafoss som anbefalte landsbyen Wera som sted for prosjektet.  Behovet innen sanitær og vann er stort og han visste at folk her er dyktige og ville gjøre en stor dugnadsinnsats.  Med Dala Rieko og kompetansen her, i tillegg til samarbeidet med den lokale Rotaryklubben,  har alt gått på skinner.



Nevnes kan  at prosjektet ble kåret til det beste internasjonale prosjektet i vårt Rotarydistrikt, på distriktskonferansen på Hamar i høst.

I slutten av januar reiser en gruppe på 17 personer,  rotarianere og ledsagere, til prosjektområdet. Kenyaturen avsluttes med safari i Masai Mara.

Avlingene øker med riktig tilførsel av økologisk gjødsel og nok vann !
